Kitchen Remodel Checklist: How to Prepare for Your Kitchen Remodel

You’ve made the big decision to renovate your kitchen.

Because kitchens vary in size and are often custom, the renovations could take some time. How can you make it easier to live through this awkward period while achieving your dream kitchen?

Preparing for your kitchen remodel is a big task that requires plenty of patience, not to mention a budget for all foreseen and unforeseen costs. Keep reading for your kitchen remodel checklist to help you get started on your remodel project.

Before You Get Started

Take down pictures in nearby rooms. These could fall off the wall or get knocked down. You need to look beyond your kitchen for these valuables.

You will have to make arrangements for how to get rid of unwanted items such as a dumpster. You can also donate to Habitat for Humanity for reusable items like fixtures, cabinets, and appliances.

Set Up a Temporary Kitchen

Everyone still needs to eat during the renovation. Eating out can put a strain on your budget. Find a place outside of the construction to sit, eat, and prepare food.

Move your fridge into this area. If you can’t move your fridge, you may need a mini-fridge.

Kitchen Remodel Checklist of Supplies

Figure out what small appliances you will use to cook your meals:

  • Microwave
  • Slow cooker
  • Toaster oven
  • Hotplate
  • Electric Griddle
  • Grill (if the weather is nice)

Before your renovation, take note of kitchen items you use daily such as:

  • Can openers
  • Peelers
  • Skillets
  • Coffee pot
  • Spatula
  • Other cooking utensils

Make sure you keep storage containers, food bags, plastic wrap, and foil handy for leftovers.

Stock up on biodegradable plates, utensils, cups, and napkins to streamline cleanup. Then recycle when done.

Get nonperishable snacks like:

  • Peanut butter
  • Bread
  • Dried fruit
  • Trail mix
  • Granola bars

Think of simple meals like sandwiches, microwave meals, and cereal, so you don’t have to cook all the time.

Control the Dirt

Even with plastic sheets around the demo site, you will notice drywall dust throughout the house. You can use a microfiber cloth or feather dust to clean up the mess.

You will also want to cover up your electronics such as computers and TVs. Just like the valuables, you will need to protect furniture in nearby rooms by putting a sheet over them. Drywall dust can go far!

Plan for Your Pets

Pets may have a hard time with the renovations. You may need a crate for your dog if he doesn’t have one already. You will need to find a safe place for them to eat, sleep, and drink water.

You will also need to plan a direction for your pet to go outside. Practice taking your dog outside with the new route before renovations begin. You may even want to board your dog during the loudest parts of the renovations.

Protect Yourself from the Domino Budget Theory

When you determine your budget, you should set aside 20 percent of this cost for unexpected expenses. You never know what you mind find under the floors or behind cabinets.

You made your budget so stick to it. It’s easy to get sidetracked.
